70s sequins, afro wigs and a vintage fair! What a weekend!

What a busy weekend it was. On the Saturday I headed to Twickenham for the rugby 7s dressed in 70s disco! I’ve never seen so many afro wigs in one place! Despite drinking from 12pm that day I somehow managed to be sensible and head home early so I could get an early start at The Vintage Event held at the Balham Bowls Club. I met some really lovely people and had lots of fun on the stall. Here’s a couple of pics…

LA roadtrip and Coachella 2012!

A few months ago me and three friends decided to take a trip of a lifetime and head to LA and Coachella! It was amazing! We saw all the typical tourist sites in LA such as the Hollywood sign, Rodeo Drive and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and spent a few days checking out Venice Beach, Santa Monica and Laguna Beach. We then headed to Coachella for the best musical festival of the year. Despite melting in 40 degrees we saw some fantastic acts like Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and the amazing 2Pac who was magically brought back to life during a performance with Snoop Dogg.

Date for your diary: The Vintage Home Show launches for 2012!

Discover Vintage is thrilled to announce the launch of its first ever Vintage Home Show in London this March.

New for 2012 this much anticipated first-time event will take place on Sunday 18th March at the Chiswick Town Hall in West London. Bringing together over 35 exhibitors the Vintage Home Show will showcase an eclectic collection of classic and iconic furniture and home wares celebrating the 1930’s through to the 1970’s.

Featuring a vibrant mix from furniture to artwork, ceramics, glass, lighting, textiles and decorative pieces, the Vintage Home Show will indulge all tastes from Art Deco lovers to followers of modernism, atomic and cutting edge Mid-century design.

Open to trade and the general public, vintage fanatics can fuel their passion for collectables including glass, paperweights and pottery from Midwinter and Poole, whilst furniture, from chairs and tables to sideboards are perfect for the cool design conscious. The show will also feature beautiful old mirrors, lamps and floor lights together with film posters, mass market artworks and soft home furnishings from an era gone by.

Housed in the Chiswick Town Hall in West London, this grand listed building offers the perfect backdrop for trawling through retro treasures, collectable kitsch and on trend industrial pieces to make a house a home.

Granddaughter discovers her Grandmother’s amazing illustrations from 1951

Twinkle Troughton discovered these incredible illustrations which were drawn by her Dutch grandmother, Nanna Trudy, after moving to England in 1951 following WWII. Deciding that they were just too beautiful to be kept hidden away, Twinkle and her mother have set up a new venture and are sharing Nanna Trudy’s talents with the rest of the world selling a selection of gorgeous greeting cards, aprons, cushions and gift tags.

What I love even more is that there is a very emotional story behind who Nanna Trudy was. As somebody who’s grandfather served in the Dutch navy and came to England following the war, I can really relate to Trudy’s story and I hope you will enjoy it too. In the words of Twinkle…

Born in Amsterdam, Trudy’s childhood fell apart when in World War 2, her father joined the resistance movement and the family had to live under assumed names, in hiding, often eating no more than tulip bulbs.

At the age of 19 Trudy came to study nursing in Rugby, England and within months met the man she soon married. No guests at the wedding, just two witnesses, no honeymoon, but a trip to London Zoo. Pale, beautiful, thin, afraid of the sound of planes, in a foreign country, slowly Trudy saw a life that held promise and joy. Her pictures, all originals, drawn in 1951-52, reflect the life she so wanted to live.

Years later after Trudy passed away, these drawings by a much loved Nanna resurfaced. The family felt the drawings were too beautiful to be hidden away in an old sketchbook. In honour of Trudy and her dreams, and for thousands of women like her in those post war years, these drawings have been given new life. The drawings are not nostalgic reflections of an era gone by, but were created at he time and are as authentic and original as any vintage artefact you might find.

Today we’re mad about…my mum’s beautiful vintage cushions

For those of you that don’t know, the pretty lady in the black and white photo is my gorgeous mummy and she’s been making some colourful vintage cushions that I just had to share with you. My mum studied at the London College of Fashion during the height of 1960s and made all of her own amazing clothes (I only wished she had kept them all!)

Well, after raising us five kids and retiring from work she’s got back to what she does best and has been making these great cushions using vintage fabrics. Many places would charge £20 plus for these so at just £8.50 they’re a steal! Take a look…

The vintage soap that’s about to take the UK by storm!

My friends know that I love my smellies and so when one of them gave me a bottle of Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap I could hardly contain my excitement and already had my next hour long bath time booked in my diary…candles and all!

I’d already heard about this product through the grapevine but when I did a little internet research I found out that it was USA’s No.1 selling natural soap with a huge celebrity following including Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman and even make-up artist Bobbi Brown who said, “It’s probably the finest soap in the universe. I’m obsessed with it. I can’t get enough of it!”

What’s great about this soap is that it has a total of 18 uses which is amazing if you like saving the pennies like me! It can be used as a shower gel, mouthwash, kitchen cleaner and even a fancy pet shampoo! Plus, it’s made from all natural ingredients so you know you’re doing your bit for the planet too!

The vintage labelling is really quirky and contains a number of Dr Bronner’s philosophies (he had a personal mission to unite mankind). Apparently he used to give away soaps when doing public talks about world peace but when he noticed people were taking the soap without listening to his speeches, he decided to write them on the labelling.

After my lovely bath and doing my weekly house cleaning chores I’m already a big fan and feel I should do my own missionary work to spread the word in the UK!
